History of DMOZ Open Directory Project:

DMOZ was based within the US as Gnuhoo in 1998. His founders made Skrenta and Bob Truel were operating as engineers for Sun Microsystems. Later, Gnuhoo was modified to NewHoo.

NewHoo was noninheritable by browser Communications Corporation in Oct 1998 and have become the Open Directory Project.

Later that month, AOL noninheritable browser, giving AOL management of The Open Directory.

By could 2005, this portion of DMOZ enclosed over thirty two,000 web site listings.

DMOZ information powers the core directory services for several of the Web’s largest search engines and portals, together with browser Search, AOL Search, and Alexa. Google Directory used DMOZ info, till being closed in Gregorian calendar month 2011.
